How steps are converted to miles

A step is the distance from one footfall to the next, so the total distance is the number of steps times the length of one step. The only thing that varies from person to person is the step length. Taller people usually take longer steps, and the same person takes longer steps when walking fast or running.

Steps to distance

Miles = steps × step length in inches ÷ 63,360

Kilometers = steps × step length in meters ÷ 1,000

Steps per mile = 63,360 ÷ step length in inches

There are 63,360 inches in a mile and 1,609.344 meters.

Estimating step length from height

Women: step length = height × 0.413

Men: step length = height × 0.415

This is a common walking estimate. It is an average, so measuring your own step is better when you can.

Worked examples

10,000 steps for a 5 ft 6 in woman

Height 66 inches, so the step length is 66 × 0.413 = 27.26 inches.

She would walk about 4.3 miles in 10,000 steps.

10,000 steps for a 5 ft 11 in man

Height 71 inches, so the step length is 71 × 0.415 = 29.47 inches.

A longer step means fewer steps are needed for each mile.

A 5 mile walk with an average step

Step length 30 inches, so one mile is 63,360 ÷ 30 = 2,112 steps.

Use distance to steps mode for any walk or run you plan.

A note on accuracy and health

Step length changes with speed, hills, shoes and tiredness, so every step based distance is an estimate. The calorie figure is a rough guide only. This calculator is for general information and is not medical advice. If you have a health condition, ask a doctor before changing your activity level.

It is a popular round number and a handy target, but it is not a strict medical rule. Many people benefit from moving more than they do now, so build up at a pace that suits you.
