How to calculate time and a half
Time and a half pays an extra half of your regular rate for each qualifying hour. Multiply your regular hourly rate by 1.5 to get the new rate, then multiply by the number of hours at that rate. Add this to your regular pay for the total.
Time and a half
Time and a half rate = regular hourly rate × 1.5
Overtime pay = overtime hours × time and a half rate
Total pay = regular hours × regular rate + overtime pay
For double time use 2 instead of 1.5, and for triple time use 3.
Finding your hourly rate from a salary
Weekly pay = yearly salary ÷ 52
Hourly rate = weekly pay ÷ hours the salary covers each week
A $52,000 salary covering 40 hours a week is $1,000 ÷ 40 = $25 an hour.
Worked examples
$20 an hour with 5 hours of overtime
40 regular hours and 5 hours at time and a half.
The five extra hours earn $50 more than they would at the regular rate.
A $52,000 salary
$52,000 ÷ 52 = $1,000 a week, and $1,000 ÷ 40 hours = $25 an hour.
The total is $1,000 regular pay plus $225 overtime.
Double time on a holiday
Some employers pay double time for holidays. An employee earning $18 an hour works 8 hours.
Compare this with $144 at the regular rate.

Under US federal law (the Fair Labor Standards Act), most non-exempt employees must be paid at least time and a half for hours worked over 40 in a workweek. Holiday and weekend premiums are usually set by the employer or a contract, not by federal law. Some states add their own rules, such as daily overtime.
