Discount formulas
Sale price from a percent off
Savings = original price × percent off ÷ 100
Sale price = original price − savings
25% off $80: savings = $20, sale price = $60.
Percent off from two prices
Percent off = (original price − sale price) ÷ original price × 100
$80 down to $59.99: (80 − 59.99) ÷ 80 × 100 = 25.01% off.
Stacked discounts
Total discount = 1 − (1 − first) × (1 − second)
20% then 10% is 1 − 0.8 × 0.9 = 0.28, so 28% off, not 30%.
Discount examples
Example 1: 25% off $80
A jacket costs $80 and is marked 25% off.
You pay three quarters of the original price.
Example 2: 20% off plus an extra 10% with tax
The same $80 jacket is 20% off, there is an extra 10% off at checkout, and sales tax is 8%.
The second discount applies to the already-reduced price, so it saves less than the first.
Example 3: 50% off then an extra 20%
A $80 item at 50% off with an extra 20% off.
Use the both prices mode to check the real percent off on any deal.

Discount calculator FAQ
How do I calculate a discount?
Multiply the original price by the percent off and divide by 100 to get the savings, then subtract the savings from the price. 25% off $80 is $20 off, so $60.
How do I find the percent off from two prices?
Subtract the sale price from the original price, divide by the original price and multiply by 100. $80 down to $59.99 is 25.01% off.
Is 20% off plus 10% off the same as 30% off?
No. The second discount applies to the reduced price, so the total is 28% off. On $80 you pay $57.60, not $56.
Is sales tax charged before or after the discount?
In most US stores sales tax is charged on the price after store discounts. Some manufacturer coupons are taxed on the full price, depending on the state.
How do I calculate 30% off $49.99?
$49.99 × 0.70 = $34.99 (rounded). You save about $15.00.
What is a quick way to work out a discount in my head?
Find 10% by moving the decimal one place left, then multiply. 10% of $80 is $8, so 25% is $8 × 2.5 = $20.
