How to convert time to decimal

Clock time counts in sixty minutes, but decimal time counts in tenths and hundredths. To switch, divide the minutes by 60 and add them to the hours. This makes timesheets easy to add up and multiply by a pay rate.

Time to decimal hours

Decimal hours = hours + minutes ÷ 60 + seconds ÷ 3,600

Decimal minutes = hours × 60 + minutes + seconds ÷ 60

Example: 7 hours 45 minutes = 7 + 45 ÷ 60 = 7.75 hours.

Decimal hours back to time

Hours = the whole number

Minutes = the decimal part × 60

Example: 2.33 hours = 2 hours + 0.33 × 60 minutes = 2 hours 19.8 minutes.

Worked examples

7 hours 45 minutes

Add the minutes divided by 60 to the hours.

A quarter hour is always 0.25, so this result is easy to check.

8 hours 10 minutes 30 seconds

10 ÷ 60 = 0.1667 and 30 ÷ 3,600 = 0.0083.

Seconds add a small amount, which is why exact payroll uses decimals.

2.33 decimal hours to time

The decimal part 0.33 × 60 = 19.8 minutes.

Rounded to the nearest minute this is 2 hours 20 minutes.

Rounding a shift of 7 hours 50 minutes

Payroll systems often round to a set step.

Check which rounding rule your employer or payroll system uses.

Where a time to decimal calculator helps

Payroll and timesheets

Turn hours and minutes into a figure you can multiply by a pay rate. Try the time card calculator for a full week.

Freelance billing

Bill clients by the tenth or quarter hour with exact decimal time.

Spreadsheets

Put decimal hours in a sheet so totals add up correctly.

Time tracking

Convert app or stopwatch time into decimals for reports.

Rounding and accuracy

Repeating decimals such as 0.3333 are rounded, so very small differences can appear when you add many days together. If you round each shift, the weekly total may differ slightly from rounding only at the end. Follow the rule your employer or payroll provider uses.

Time to decimal calculator FAQ

Divide the minutes by 60. For example, 30 minutes is 30 ÷ 60 = 0.5 hours and 20 minutes is 0.33 hours.

15 minutes is 0.25 hours. 30 minutes is 0.5 hours and 45 minutes is 0.75 hours.

Keep the whole number as hours and multiply the decimal part by 60 to get minutes. For 4.4 hours, 0.4 × 60 = 24, so it is 4 hours 24 minutes.

Multiply the time cell by 24 and format the result as a number. For example, a cell showing 7:45 times 24 gives 7.75.

Decimals make pay simple. Decimal hours multiplied by an hourly rate gives the pay, with no need to work with sixty minute hours.

Six minutes is one tenth of an hour, so some billing systems round time to the nearest tenth. 7 hours 50 minutes becomes 7.8 hours under that rule.
