How working days are counted
Counting working days between two dates
Working days = calendar days − weekend days − holidays that fall on a weekday
With Count the end date too turned on, both the first and the last day are included in the calendar days.
A holiday that falls on a weekend is not subtracted twice.
Adding or subtracting working days
Start at the start date and move one day at a time, forward or back.
Count a day only if it is not a weekend day and not a holiday.
Stop when the count reaches the number of working days you asked for.
The start date itself is not counted.
Holidays included
United States (federal): New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents’ Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth (from 2021), Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas Day.
United Kingdom (England and Wales): New Year’s Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, the early May bank holiday, the spring bank holiday, the summer bank holiday, Christmas Day and Boxing Day.
When a fixed-date holiday falls on a weekend, the calculator uses the observed or substitute weekday. Local, state and company holidays are not included.
Worked examples
A week with Thanksgiving
Count the working days from Monday 23 November to Friday 27 November 2026 with United States federal holidays turned on.
With no holidays selected, the same week has 5 working days.
Add 5 working days
Start on Friday 20 November 2026 and add 5 working days with United States federal holidays turned on.
The result is Monday 30 November 2026. Without holidays it would be Friday 27 November.
A whole year
How many working days are in 2026?
In 2026, 4 July falls on a Saturday, so the United States observes it on Friday 3 July. Boxing Day falls on a Saturday, so the United Kingdom takes Monday 28 December.
Business days in Excel
Excel has built-in functions for working days. Put the start date in A1 and the end date in B1. List any holidays in a range such as D1:D10 to leave them out.
Excel formulas for working days
Days between: =NETWORKDAYS(A1,B1)
With holidays: =NETWORKDAYS(A1,B1,D1:D10)
Custom weekend: =NETWORKDAYS.INTL(A1,B1,7)
Add working days: =WORKDAY(A1,10,D1:D10)
NETWORKDAYS counts both the start and end date. Code 7 in NETWORKDAYS.INTL makes Friday and Saturday the weekend.
Excel example
Monday 23 November 2026 to Friday 27 November 2026, with Thanksgiving on 26 November listed as a holiday.
